When anxiety, depression, or another mental health condition starts to interfere with your work or your relationships, an hour of therapy a week may not give you enough support. Foundations Ohio offers mental health treatment for adults through a structured day program, with full-day and half-day schedules at our Hilliard location near Columbus, OH. Knowing what day treatment involves and who it’s designed for can make it easier to decide what comes next.

What Mental Health Treatment Involves

Mental health treatment helps you understand and manage symptoms that get in the way of daily life. It ranges from occasional outpatient therapy to hospital-based care, and many people need something in between: more structure than a weekly session can offer, while still living at home.

At Foundations Ohio, mental health treatment takes place in a day program. You attend scheduled treatment at our Hilliard facility during the day and return home afterward.

Conditions We Treat

Our mental health day treatment is designed for adults living with conditions such as anxiety and depression. Your treatment plan depends on your symptoms and history, not on a diagnosis alone.

Anxiety Disorders

Everyone feels anxious sometimes. An anxiety disorder involves worry or fear that lasts, is hard to control, and starts to limit what you do. Treatment for anxiety focuses on understanding what drives the worry and practicing different ways to respond to it.

Depression

Depression is more than a low mood. It can drain your energy, change your sleep and appetite, and make it hard to care about things that used to matter to you. Depression treatment gives you daily structure and clinical support while you and your treatment team work on the symptoms affecting you most.

Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder causes shifts in mood and energy, with periods of elevated or irritable mood and periods of depression. Bipolar disorder treatment helps you recognize early signs of a mood change and build a routine that supports stability.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) involves unwanted, intrusive thoughts and repeated behaviors or mental rituals that a person feels driven to perform. OCD treatment helps you understand that cycle and loosen the hold it has on your day.

Mental Health Day Treatment: Full-Day PHP and Half-Day IOP

Mental health day treatment is the name of our program, and it is also a defined service under Ohio’s behavioral health rules. The state describes it as an intensive, structured, goal-oriented service, with a program day that includes between two and seven hours of scheduled treatment. Under those rules, day treatment can include work on coping skills, problem solving, managing symptoms, and learning about your diagnosis and treatment.

We offer mental health day treatment at two levels of care:

  • Full-day treatment, also called a partial hospitalization program (PHP), gives you the most hours of treatment each day and the most structure while you live at home
  • Half-day treatment, also called an intensive outpatient program (IOP), gives you fewer hours each day, which can leave more room for work, school, or family

Your admissions and clinical team will help you decide which level of care fits your needs. Your plan can change as you progress, including a move from PHP to IOP when you’re ready for a lighter schedule. PHP and IOP are the same levels of care used in our addiction treatment programs, with programming here focused on mental health.

Is Mental Health Day Treatment Right for You?

Day treatment may be a good fit if you:

  • Have symptoms that make it hard to keep up with work, school, or home life
  • Need more support than weekly therapy provides
  • Want structured treatment while continuing to live at home
  • Are an adult who is safe to be at home between treatment days

Day treatment may not be the right level of care if you:

  • Are at immediate risk of harming yourself or someone else
  • Need 24-hour medical or psychiatric supervision
  • Need medical care to safely stop drinking or using drugs

If you aren’t sure which kind of mental health treatment you need, our admissions team can talk through your situation with you. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or call 911 if you are in immediate danger.

When Mental Health and Substance Use Overlap

Mental health symptoms and substance use often affect each other. Some people drink or use drugs to cope with anxiety or low mood, and over time, substance use can make those symptoms worse. If you’re dealing with both, dual diagnosis treatment addresses them together so that progress in one area supports the other. Because our addiction treatment and mental health day treatment share one location in Hilliard, you can receive care for both in the same place.
