Depression can make ordinary things take more effort than they should, like getting out of bed or answering a text. If it has lasted for weeks and isn’t lifting on its own, you may need more support than you’ve had so far. Foundations Ohio offers depression treatment for adults through our mental health day treatment program at our Hilliard location near Columbus, OH.

How Depression Is Different From a Rough Patch

Everyone goes through low stretches, and most pass with time. Depression lasts. Clinicians look for symptoms that show up most of the day, nearly every day, for at least two weeks, and that make it harder to function at home, at work, or at school.

You might notice:

  • A sad, anxious, or empty mood that doesn’t lift
  • Losing interest in things you used to enjoy
  • Feeling tired all the time, or thinking and moving more slowly
  • Changes in sleep or appetite
  • Trouble concentrating or making decisions
  • Feeling hopeless, worthless, or guilty
  • Irritability or restlessness

Depression takes different forms, including major depression, persistent depressive disorder, and seasonal affective disorder. A clinical assessment helps sort out what you’re experiencing and what kind of care fits.

Depression can also bring thoughts of death or suicide. If you’re having those thoughts, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or call 911 if you’re in immediate danger.

What Depression Treatment Usually Involves

Depression treatment typically involves talk therapy, medication, or both. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and interpersonal therapy (IPT) are two well-studied approaches. Antidepressants usually take four to eight weeks to work, and you should talk with your prescriber before starting or stopping any medication.

For many people, the bigger question is how much support they need. Weekly therapy works well for some. Others need more structure, more often, to get through the hardest stretch, and that’s where day treatment comes in.

Depression Treatment at Foundations Ohio

Depression treatment at Foundations Ohio takes place in our mental health day treatment program. You can attend at one of two levels of care:

  • Full-day treatment, also called a partial hospitalization program (PHP), offers the most hours of treatment and structure each day
  • Half-day treatment, also called an intensive outpatient program (IOP), offers fewer hours each day so you have more time for work, school, or family

Your treatment plan is built around your symptoms and history. Day treatment can include learning coping skills, building a steadier daily routine, and understanding how depression affects you, and your plan can move from PHP to IOP when you’re ready for a lighter schedule.

Depression treatment is part of the broader mental health treatment we offer in Hilliard, which also includes care for anxiety and other conditions.

Depression and Substance Use

Alcohol can deepen a low mood, and drinking or using drugs to cope often makes depression harder to treat. If substance use has become part of how you get through the day, dual diagnosis treatment addresses both at the same Hilliard location, so you don’t have to choose which one to deal with first.

Is Day Treatment Right for You?

Day treatment may be a good fit if:

  • Depression is making it hard to keep up with work, school, or home life
  • Weekly therapy or medication alone hasn’t been enough
  • You’re safe to live at home during treatment

Day treatment may not be the right level of care if you:

  • Are at immediate risk of harming yourself or someone else
  • Need 24-hour medical or psychiatric supervision
  • Need medical care to safely stop drinking or using drugs

If you aren’t sure which level of care you need, our admissions team can talk it through with you.

If You’re Worried About Someone

Depression can be hard to see from the outside, and the person living with it may not have the energy to look for help. If you’re worried about a partner, an adult child, or a friend, you can call our admissions team yourself to ask how day treatment works and what getting started would involve. If they talk about wanting to die or hurt themselves, take it seriously and call or text 988 for guidance.

Getting Started

Starting treatment usually follows three steps:

  1. Call or contact our admissions team to talk about what’s been going on
  2. Complete an assessment so the team can recommend a level of care
  3. Verify your insurance benefits before your first day
